School Visits

One family in Christ...for all the family: Loving, Serving, Growing

St Edward’s Church, Eggbuckland

A resource for Education in the local community

We are keen to be used by our local schools to enrich and support your curriculum and deepen community connections. There are many ways that we can work in partnership with you – here are just a few:

History:

We have a building as you will know that has been there since the middle-ages (1430’s) and a church has been on the site since before the Doomsday book of 1086! This means the building and its grounds have seen every period of British history you are likely to study so could be a good local resource and backdrop for local historical learning. Significantly, this part of Plymouth was used by Royalist forces to direct the campaign against the Plymouth Sectarians – Widey Court was so named because Prince Maurice (King Charles’ cousin was based there). Also ‘Austin Farm’ is alleged to be named after the Augustinian Monks who farmed there (based at Plympton Priory and ran Eggbuckland Church for several hundred years)!

Ecology:

St Edward’s is committed to pursuing Eco Church status – we have now achieved a silver award (July 2018) from A Roche (an environmental charity supporting churches to care for the environment) and seek to manage the church, hall, and churchyard in an environmentally sensitive way. We even have 2 beehives in the churchyard!! We are committed to reducing our use of single-use plastics and are supporting ‘plastic free Plymouth’ campaigns. We would be delighted for you use us or the churchyard for any work around this you would find helpful and enriching to your curriculum.

Art:

As a special place for the people of Eggbuckland down the centuries, we have a number of artistic artifacts in a variety of media (Stone, canvas, wood, glass, fabric, etc) that may be inspiring for your children. Obviously, most are inspired by faith but this can be an interesting approach to both art and RE.

Music:

Please do feel able to use our building for performances or concerts at any time of year – It is an attractive, intimate yet special venue to enjoy concerts – we now have some modest facilities for serving light refreshments as well as a toilet within the building. Just let us know with plenty of notice and we will do our best to accommodate you. We also have Church bells (6) and a highly competent tower of ringers – Our tower captain has access to a set of handbells and so we could offer handbell ringing as an experience to the children if that was something that was wanted.

RE

Of course, first and foremost we are a living Christian community and anyway that we can support your teaching of Christianity we would be very pleased to do so either by a class visiting the church or by me visiting the school.

Pastoral Care:

We are also happy to support in times of need in whatever way we can – we are linked to North Plymouth Food Bank, CAP, the Salvation Army as well as other citywide organisations and if there are ways that you think we might be able to support your families or staff, we would be very happy to do what we can.

For more information, to discuss an idea or book an event please contact Rev Chris Routledge who will be very pleased to help.
